Advice for New Moms

KIWI, Parenting, Pregnancy & Baby | June 15, 2015

Latham Thomas is a mom, a doula, yogi, author, and entrepreneur. Here she shares her favorite…

Way to start the day:

I wake up early—long before my 11-year-old son—so I have alone time and I’m not rushing. Thinking about what I’m thankful for gets me mentally ready to start the day.

Organic ingredient:

Coconut oil. I use it for so many things, from cook- ing to skin, hair, and nail care!

Way to pamper herself:

In my company, Mama Glow, we talk about something I call “glow time.” It’s about making time to take care of yourself. My personal glow time practice is drawing a hot bath with salts at night and just soaking. It’s a great way to induce a relaxation response in the body and mind.

Advice for new moms:

Establish a sister circle. Develop strong friendships with people who will show you the ropes and support you, even if it’s just holding your baby while you take a shower. This is an important phase that you don’t get to do over, so you want to enjoy it and not be reluctant to let people help you along the way.

When I’m feeling frazzled I step away from what I’m doing and take 10 long, deep breaths.

Guilty pleasure:

I make this delicious popcorn with truffle oil and sea salt, turn on my favorite show, and just lounge on a Friday night.

Aspect of her career:

Watching women as they transition into motherhood and grow into such amazing, powerful women through the experience of birth.

Place in her home:

Our home has built-in mantels where I can create beautiful little worlds and scenes with my favorite found objects, like a Buddha I got in Indonesia.

Beauty routine:

I use a face wash, toner, moisturizer, and oil from Tata Harper. But the most important aspect is what I put into my body. Topical treatments are helpful, but the baseline is a healthy diet and proper hydration.

Don’t blink. And be present. This is a precious moment in time!

Besides, of course, my son, it’s other women preparing to give birth. It reminds me that women are capable of so much, and we’re powerful. We’re all in this together.
