Hi Mom’s! I’m needing some advice/suggestions on how to get my picky 10 year old son to try new foods. I’m not sure why he is so picky because nobody else in the household is. I’m not talking picky on a few items of food I’m talking a huge wide variety of foods he will not eat or eat anything containing the ingredients.

AnonymousI am forunate that my oldest is an easy eater, he just eats super slow. Anyway do you know why he does not want to eat certain ingredients? Is it texture? Taste? Does he think certain food are bad for him?
I am sure this is tough. Maybe finding out the reasons why, you can find different alternatives. -

If your son is a healthy weight, and healthy in general, let this go. Let him outgrow this in his own way and time; don’t turn it into a control issue or it will be harder and more complicated to change.

I’ve seen this issue a lot with kids with sensory issues or ones that are on the spectrum and don’t like changes, including changes in foods, and will only eat the same foods. It’s so hard when people try to give advice like “they’ll eat when they’re hungry” and “don’t give in, just make them eat what you’re eating.” It’s not that easy. My sister tried that with my nephew and he forced it down only to vomit after. I say just keep trying. Offer new things and see if he’ll take a bite or two. One bite here and there and sometimes they eventually like it. I did this with my son. As long as he tried i was happy. Then he could have something he liked if he really didn’t like it. It’s not a battle I wanted to fight so we don’t.

I have always let my picky eaters help me shop at the store and make dinner as it seemed that they would eat better if I let them help out more in the kitchen

I’ve definitely got a picky eater! I think most of her problem are the texture of different foods. I also have trouble with getting her to eat meat.

can try rewarding your kid or finding another way to include those foods like blending or mashing them in or making them fun

If kids are hungry they will eat for sure. Also, try to give them healthy snacks.

I’ve had the same problem with my 6 years-old child. You need patience, it’s a matter of time. He slowly started to eat new foods.
Take a look on http://www.esme.com it’s a web for mothers in US. I found it very helpful to me when I was in your situation. You can find support from other mothers there. -
